What does CRM mean?

In a CRM every customer has a record: contact details, company, notes, emails, quotes and tasks. Knowledge lives in a shared place instead of one colleague's head or inbox.

For a small business a CRM usually replaces a spreadsheet and scattered emails. Most CRMs include a sales pipeline, tasks and a calendar; many add email campaigns, invoicing or a helpdesk.

Why does it matter to a small business?

In a small business two or three people often handle every customer, and the knowledge sits in their heads, their phones and their inboxes. When someone goes on holiday or leaves, the customers' history goes with them. A CRM puts it in one shared place, so anyone can see who asked for what, what was promised and what the next step is, even when the usual colleague is out.

What does it look like in practice?

Details

Suppose a bakery in Szeged also takes cake orders for events. Enquiries used to arrive on Messenger, by phone and by email, and orders were kept in a notebook. With a CRM every customer gets a record, the quote and the delivery day go into the calendar as tasks, and on Monday morning the owner sees on one board which events are still open.
