Webhook

In short

A webhook is an automatic notification: when something happens in one system, it sends the event's data to an address in another system.

What does Webhook mean?

With an API the other system asks; with a webhook the event speaks for itself, when a new contact is created, for example.

Webhooks are usually signed, so the receiver can check they really came from the sender.

Why does it matter to a small business?

When another system needs to know about something straight away, such as a deal won or an invoice paid, asking over and over is slow and wasteful. A webhook speaks the moment the event happens. For a small business that means even a simple connection works in real time: the warehouse, the books or a team channel hear about it when it happens.

What does it look like in practice?

Details

Suppose an events company in Szeged wants its storekeeper to know at once about every deal won, so the equipment can be prepared. It sets up a webhook on the deal-won event, pointing at its stock program's address. If that program is down, the delivery is tried again later, and the log shows when it went through.

How does HelloCRM handle it?

Details

HelloCRM sends signed webhooks (the signature arrives in the X-HelloCRM-Signature header) with retries and a delivery log. Events to choose from include a new contact, a deal won or lost, a quote accepted, an invoice paid and a shop order. The automations' webhook step sends and reads replies too.
